Job Search Skill

Automated daily job search using browser automation.

Quick Start

  • /proficiently:job-search - Run daily search with default terms from matching rules

Data Directory

All user data lives in a .proficiently/ folder. To find it:

  1. Check the current working directory for .proficiently/ — use it if found
  2. Check DATA_DIR/ — use it if found
  3. If neither exists, tell the user to run /proficiently:setup first

IMPORTANT: If no folder is selected (i.e. the working directory looks like an ephemeral session path such as /sessions/...), stop and tell the user:

"Before we start, you need to select a folder so your data persists between sessions. Click 'Work in a folder' and select your home directory, then try again."

All paths below use DATA_DIR to mean whichever .proficiently/ directory was found.

Workflow

Step 0: Check Prerequisites

First, resolve the data directory using the rules above. Then check that the required data files exist:

  • DATA_DIR/resume/* - at least one resume file (besides README.md)
  • DATA_DIR/preferences.md - populated with real content (not just a template)

If either is missing, tell the user: "Run /proficiently:setup first to configure your resume and preferences." Then stop.

Step 1: Load Context

Read these files:

  • DATA_DIR/resume/* (candidate profile)
  • DATA_DIR/preferences.md (preferences)
  • DATA_DIR/job-history.md (to avoid duplicates)

Extract search terms from:

  1. $ARGUMENTS if provided
  2. Target roles from preferences

Step 2: Browser Search

Use Claude in Chrome MCP tools:

1. tabs_context_mcp → get browser state
2. tabs_create_mcp → new tab
3. navigate → https://hiring.cafe
4. For each search term:
   - Enter search query
   - Capture job listings (title, company, location, salary)
   - For each listing, click through to find the direct employer URL

IMPORTANT: Hiring.cafe is just our search tool — the user should never see hiring.cafe links. For every job, follow the link from hiring.cafe to reach the actual employer careers page or job posting. Capture that direct employer URL as the job link. If you can't resolve the direct link, note the company name so the user can find it themselves.

Step 3: Evaluate Jobs

Spawn the evaluation subagent with:

  • Candidate profile summary
  • Matching rules
  • Raw job listings

The subagent returns scored jobs with fit ratings (High/Medium/Low/Skip).

Step 4: Save History

Append ALL jobs to DATA_DIR/job-history.md using format from assets/templates/job-entry.md:

Step 5: Save Job Postings for Top Matches

For each High-fit job, save the full posting:

  1. Navigate to the direct employer URL captured in Step 2
  2. Extract the full job description, requirements, and qualifications
  3. Save to DATA_DIR/jobs/[company-slug]-[date]/posting.md

Include the direct employer URL at the top of the saved posting. If the full posting can't be loaded from the employer site, save what was captured from the search results.

Step 6: Present Results

Show only NEW High/Medium fits not in previous history:

Step 7: Next Steps

After presenting results, tell the user:

  • To tailor a resume: /proficiently:tailor-resume [job URL]
  • To write a cover letter: /proficiently:cover-letter [job URL]

IMPORTANT: Do NOT attempt to tailor resumes or write cover letters yourself. Those are separate skills with their own workflows. If the user asks to "build a resume" or "write a cover letter" for a job, direct them to use the appropriate skill command.

Step 8: Learn from Feedback

If user provides feedback, update DATA_DIR/preferences.md:

  • "No agencies" → add to dealbreakers
  • "Prefer AI companies" → add to nice-to-haves
  • "Minimum $350k" → update salary threshold
