Fishing — Tampa Bay

Write fishing content cards for Tampa Bay captains at Port32 Tierra Verde and Port32 Tampa.

Local Species & Seasons

  • Snook — passes, mangrove shorelines, dock lights. Catch-and-release June 1–Aug 31. Slot 28"–33"
  • Redfish — grass flats, oyster bars, mangrove edges. Slot 18"–27", 1 per person
  • Spotted Seatrout — grass flats, sandy potholes. 15"–20" slot, 3 per person
  • Sheepshead — bridge pilings, docks, rock piles. Peak Dec–Mar. 12" min, 8 per person
  • Black Drum — same structure as sheepshead. Peak winter

Seasonal

  • Tarpon (May–Aug) — Egmont Key, Skyway Bridge, passes. Catch-and-release only in state waters
  • Kingfish (Oct–Apr) — Egmont Key reef, Skyway artificial reef
  • Cobia (Mar–May) — follow rays on flats, Skyway area
  • Mangrove Snapper (year-round, peak summer) — docks, bridges, nearshore reefs
  • Grouper/Snapper offshore (Jan–May open for red grouper, check regs annually)

Key Spots

  • Bunces Pass — snook, redfish, trout on the flats. Watch draft at low tide.
  • Skyway Bridge — sheepshead (winter), snook under lights (summer), kingfish nearby
  • Egmont Key — tarpon alley (summer), snook on the beach, snapper on the reef
  • Fort De Soto flats — wade fishing for trout and redfish
  • Weedon Island — mangrove redfish, snook
  • Shell Key flats — trout, redfish on low-incoming tides

Port32 Tie-ins

  • Tierra Verde puts you 5 minutes from Bunces Pass and Shell Key
  • Tampa's fuel dock (Rec 90) is ideal for topping off before offshore runs
  • Valet launch means you're fishing by sunrise, not trailering

Card Types

  • Weekly fishing report — what's biting where, based on real conditions (check recent reports)
  • Species spotlight — deep dive on one species, local techniques, seasonal patterns
  • Spot guide — how to fish a specific location (tide, structure, approach)
  • Seasonal transition — what's changing, what to target next

Research Before Writing

Always check current conditions:

  • Tampa Bay fishing forums (thehulltruth.com)
  • FWC fishing reports
  • Local charter captain reports
  • NOAA water temp and tide data for Tampa Bay
