Local Species & Seasons

Year-Round

  • Red Drum — sound flats, inlet mouths, surf zone. 18"–27" slot, 1 per person. Peak spring/fall
  • Speckled Trout — grass flats, creek mouths, sound waters. 14" min, 4 per person
  • Flounder — inlet areas, sound structure, nearshore ledges. 15" min
  • Black Drum — sound flats, nearshore structure. Peak winter/spring
  • Sheepshead — docks, pilings, nearshore structure. Peak winter/spring

Seasonal Highlights

  • False Albacore (Sep–Nov) — beach runs, Cape Lookout area. Famous fall fishery
  • King Mackerel (May–Oct) — nearshore reefs, Gulf Stream edge. 24" min
  • Cobia (May–Sep) — following rays, nearshore structure, buoys
  • Spanish Mackerel (Apr–Nov) — inshore waters, beach areas
  • Bluefin Tuna (Dec–Mar) — offshore, Gulf Stream. Charter/experienced captains
  • Blue Marlin (May–Sep) — Gulf Stream, 50+ miles offshore
  • Dolphin (Mahi) (May–Oct) — Gulf Stream, weed lines, temperature breaks

Inshore Specialties

  • Puppy Drum — juvenile red drum in shallow sound waters
  • Gray Trout — deeper sound waters, winter fishery
  • Bluefish — seasonal runs, beach and inlet areas
  • Tarpon — summer visitors, inlet areas (smaller than Florida tarpon)

Key Spots

  • Beaufort Inlet — red drum, flounder, Spanish mackerel. Main offshore access
  • Cape Lookout — false albacore, king mackerel, cobia around the point
  • Shackleford Banks — surf fishing for drum, false albacore in fall
  • Bogue Sound — speckled trout, puppy drum on grass flats
  • Core Sound — trophy red drum, speckled trout
  • Newport River — protected water fishing, speckled trout
  • Nearshore Ledges — (8-12 miles) king mackerel, cobia, Spanish mackerel
  • Gulf Stream — (30+ miles) bluefin, blue marlin, dolphin, wahoo

Regulations (NC-Specific)

  • NC Fishing License required (different from Florida!)
  • Red Drum: 18"–27" slot, 1 per person
  • Speckled Trout: 14" min, 4 per person
  • Flounder: 15" min, 4 per person
  • King Mackerel: 24" min, 3 per person
  • Bluefin Tuna: Federal permits required, size/bag limits change annually
