The Diglossia Model (CRITICAL)

Modern Ukrainian scholarship (Shevelov, Nimchuk, Moisiyenko) rejects the "one Old Russian that split" myth. Instead, we use the Diglossia (Two-Register) Model:

Required Elements
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- •Conflating registers — Chronicle language ≠ spoken language. Always identify the register.
- •Treating OES as "Russian" — OES is NOT "Old Russian." Ukrainian is not derived from Russian.
- •The "split" narrative — Don't say Ukrainian "split from" a common ancestor. Regional dialects were ALREADY distinct.
- •Ignoring vernacular evidence — Graffiti and birch bark show actual speech; chronicles show literary convention.
- •No modern connection — Always show how OES features survive in modern Ukrainian.
- •Oversimplifying grammar — Learners need to understand the full system, not just memorize forms.
