Working with Documents
Apple Pages
To read a Pages document, use AppleScript:
osascript -e 'tell application "Pages" to get body text of document 1'
To list open Pages documents:
osascript -e 'tell application "Pages" to get name of every document'
Microsoft Word
Word has a richer AppleScript API for formatting. To format text in Word:
# Find and replace with formatting
osascript <<'EOF'
tell application "Microsoft Word"
tell find object of text object of active document
clear formatting
clear formatting its replacement
set content to "search text"
set content of its replacement to "search text"
set bold of font object of its replacement to true
execute find find text "search text" replace with "search text" replace replace all with format
end tell
end tell
EOF
Creating Documents
- •For simple text drafts, output directly in the conversation
- •For files the user needs to keep, write to the ICPS folder:
/Users/jackvanderpump/Dropbox/My Mac (Mac-Pro)/Desktop/ICPS/Electoral/ - •For website content, edit files in:
/Users/jackvanderpump/Repos/electoral-awards-website/src/data/
Responding to Requests
- •Clarify if the audience, purpose, or tone is unclear
- •Draft the full document — never just an outline unless asked
- •Include all necessary details (dates, links, contact info)
- •Use the correct template from templates.md where applicable
- •Offer to save the document or make revisions
When drafting, always consider:
- •Who is the audience? (commissioners, CSOs, academics, delegates, media)
- •What action do we want them to take? (attend, nominate, respond, share)
- •What context do they need? (event details, deadlines, background)
