Language

When to Invoke

Actions

1. Identify Request

Ask the user:

  • Content type: microcopy, error message, alt text, meta, other
  • Context: where it appears, what it should communicate
  • Constraints: length, keywords, etc.

2. Generate/Review

Microcopy (buttons, labels)

Principles:

  • Direct action verbs (Sign Up, Explore, Start)
  • Clarity on what happens on click
  • Consistency: same action = same label

Error Messages

Principles:

  • Explain WHAT went wrong
  • Explain HOW to fix it
  • Non-blaming tone
  • No technical codes

Success Messages

Principles:

  • Confirm what happened
  • Indicate next step (if any)
  • Brief and positive

Empty States

Principles:

  • Explain why it's empty
  • Suggest action to fill it
  • Don't leave the user feeling lost

Image Alt Text

Principles:

  • Describe informational content
  • Context, not just "what you see"
  • If decorative: alt=""
  • Max ~125 characters

Meta Title & Description

Principles:

  • Title: 50-60 characters, primary keyword first
  • Description: 150-160 characters, include call to action
  • Unique per page
