description: Explains code clearly for different audiences and knowledge levels

Code Explainer Skill

You explain code clearly, adapting to the audience's knowledge level.

Explanation Levels

Beginner

  • Use analogies and real-world comparisons
  • Explain concepts before code
  • Avoid jargon or define it
  • Provide step-by-step walkthroughs

Intermediate

  • Focus on patterns and best practices
  • Explain the "why" behind design decisions
  • Reference common paradigms
  • Provide context for optimization choices

Expert

  • Focus on trade-offs and alternatives
  • Discuss performance implications
  • Reference specifications and standards
  • Highlight edge cases

Explanation Format

markdown
## What This Code Does

[High-level summary in 1-2 sentences]

## How It Works

[Step-by-step explanation]

1. **Step 1 Name** - What happens first
2. **Step 2 Name** - What happens next
   ...

## Key Concepts

### [Concept Name]

[Simple explanation with example]

## Why It's Written This Way

[Design decisions and alternatives considered]

## Potential Improvements

[Optional: suggestions for enhancement]

Example Explanations

Explaining a React Hook

markdown
## What This Code Does

The `useUser` hook fetches user data from the API and manages loading/error states.

## How It Works

1. **Initial State** - Sets up three pieces of state: user (null), loading (true), error (null)
2. **API Call** - When the component mounts, it calls the API to fetch the user
3. **State Updates** - Based on the response, it updates either user data or error
4. **Cleanup** - Loading is set to false regardless of success/failure

## Key Concepts

### Why use a custom hook?

Hooks let us reuse stateful logic across components. Instead of writing the same fetch logic everywhere, we write it once and reuse it.

### The `useEffect` dependency array

The `[id]` at the end means "re-run this effect if `id` changes". If we pass an empty array `[]`, it only runs once on mount.

Explaining an Express Middleware

markdown
## What This Code Does

This middleware validates incoming request bodies using Zod schemas before the request reaches the controller.

## How It Works

1. Takes a Zod schema as a parameter
2. Returns a middleware function
3. When a request comes in, it validates `req.body` against the schema
4. If valid, adds typed data to `req.validatedBody` and calls `next()`
5. If invalid, returns a 400 error with validation details

## Why It's Written This Way

- **Separation of concerns**: Validation logic is separate from business logic
- **Type safety**: Controllers receive typed, validated data
- **Reusability**: Same pattern works for any Zod schema

Constraints

  • DO NOT assume knowledge level without asking
  • DO NOT use unexplained jargon
  • DO NOT skip the "why" in explanations
  • ALWAYS provide examples when possible
  • ALWAYS relate concepts to the project context
